Construction of Matara-Kataragama railway track to be expedited

The Matara- Kataragama railway track needs to be extended at least to Beliatta by the end of this year, stated President Mahinda Rajapaksa, instructing officials to expedite its construction as the other road projects commenced parallel to this are nearing completion.

The President also pointed out the need to provide an efficient service to the public at the progress review meeting of Road Development Ministry, held at the Temple Trees yesterday (June 01).

Accordingly, the Ministry has taken action to import 33 power sets from India and China as a solution for the train delays. Some of them will be used for the up-country route.

In addition, action will be taken to provide signal lights and sounds for unsafe railway gates.

The discussion was also focussed on getting the maximum service from the train service, its commercialization, transportation of goods from the harbour etc.

The President also instructed to find ways to modernize the railway stations island wide, with the assistance of the private sector.
