Sri Lankan High Commissioner in New Delhi , Prasad Kariyawasam in a letter to NDTV has requested the withdrawal of its report, ‘Blood on Water,’ which contain ‘innovative lies’ and ‘diabolically outdated’ description of the situation which ‘smack of academic dishonesty’.
The High Commissioner has also requested NDTV to interview him, so that any question on the issues raised in the report can be answered in order to let viewers especially in India get an accurate picture about the real ground situation in Sri Lanka.
He further states, ‘as you are aware, Sri Lankans in general and the Government in particular have had great respect for the quality and the professionalism of reportage of NDTV, not only on Sri Lanka , but on India and other global issues as well. However, allowing Chennai Bureau of NDTV to produce such a documentary/feature report on Sri Lanka and airing it at a crucial time on the eve of a State visit of President Mahinda Rajapaksa is surprising at best and smacks of an unfriendly attitude at worse’.
High Commissioner Kariyawasam in his letter further states the following :
- Prof. Chenoy of JNU for instance states that 3 to 6 lakhs of IDPs are in IDP camps and behind barbed wire! This is an utter inaccuracy since only 30,000 remain in IDP relief villages where they are free to move about and all the rest have been resettled. The number 6 lakhs is an innovative lie and her description of the situation is diabolically outdated and smack of academic dishonesty.
- It is unfortunate that film personality Mr. Seeman who is a well-known LTTE supporter, although the organization is banned in India , has been given an opportunity to comment. He of course talks disparagingly about the Government and all his comments are inimical and tendentious.
- Most of the footage shown are dated and some are over three years old.
- It is very unfortunate that some fishermen in Tamil Nadu have been allowed to air their fantastic views that have no basis on the ground reality. For instance, it is stated that after hostilities, over 300 fishermen from Tamil Nadu have been killed by Sri Lankan Navy!! It is an absolute lie. An assertion made by the Indian fishermen that Sri Lanka Navy crossed the IMBL and attacked them in Indian waters is hilarious.
- Further, those who leave Sri Lanka for economic refuge on boats to Australia have been given an opportunity to air their made up stories, which are usually used to gain entry to Australia as refugees/asylum seekers.
