Sri Lanka Navy has extended the canal boat service to the general public with effect from 1st June 2010. An especially modified "Lagoon Craft" has now been launched with 06 other passenger boats along Kirulapona Canal between Wellawatte and Nawala for public convenience.
Another Lagoon Craft of similar type for the project expansion is in the process of construction by the Naval engineers at the Navy's Inshore Patrol Craft Construction Project at the Naval Base in Welisara. The custom-built craft has seating accommodation for 35 persons and is equipped with state-of-the art facilities for a venture of this nature.
Passenger safety has been given special emphasis with the provision of on-board safety measures and life jackets. The lagoon craft and the six boats, each accommodating 12 passengers at a time, operate during the peak traffic hours between 7.30 - 9.30 am and 4.00 - 6.00 pm. A nominal fee of 10 rupees from students and 20 rupees from adults is levied to ease the costs incurred in public travel.
Sri Lanka Navy launched the Canal Boat Service in March. The first phase of the Navy's Canal Boat Service was commenced for the staff and students of the Open University from Wellawatte to Nawala along Kirulapone Canal. In response to the public request for a hassle-free, environment-friendly mode of transportation, measures were implemented to expand the project.
Accordingly, Kirulopone and Dehiwala Canals were cleaned and widened to meet the increasing demand and work on the Demotagoda Canal and St. Sebastian Canal is now nearing completion to broaden the canal network further.
