International investigation on Sri Lanka inappropriate – Minister Peiris

 

Minister of External Affairs, Prof. G.L. Peiris reiterated at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that an international investigation is entirely inappropriate in light of the establishment of an independent and effective mechanism in Sri Lanka.

The Minister addressing an audience comprising over 300 Ministers, officials, diplomats, scholars and representatives of civil society from around the world, spoke on “Counter-Insurgency and Strengthening Governance: The Sri Lankan perspective.” Ministers of Defence from 21 countries participated in the proceedings.

Minister Peiris was a panellist with Sergei Ivanov, Deputy Prime Minister of Russia. The plenary session was chaired by Dr. John Chipman, Director-General and Chief Executive of the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

On the sidelines of the conference Minister Peiris had bilateral meetings with Dr. Liam Fox, Secretary of State for Defence of the United Kingdom, Senator John Faulkner, Minister of Defence of Australia, Mr. Kim Tae Young, Minister of National Defence of South Korea, Mr. George Yeo, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Singapore, Mr. Ng Eng Hen, Minister of Education and Second Minister of Defence of Singapore, and Mr. Shiv Shankar Menon, National Security Adviser of the Government of India.

Prof. Peiris also had a discussion with Mrs. Koh Juat Jong, Actg. Attorney General of Singapore.

The Sri Lankan delegation to the Shangri-La Dialogue, led by Minister G.L. Peiris, included Air Chief Marshal Roshan Goonatileke, Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya, Commander of the Army and Ms Jayathri Samarakone, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Singapore.
