Pipe-borne water to Northern areas |
|

|
Ministry of Water Supply and Drainage is to initiate a water supply project to provide pipe-borne pure drinking water to many parts of the Jaffna peninsula where there is an acute drinking water shortage.
Currently people of the area get their water needs from wells and bore wells. But salinity is setting fast in the wells around the coastal villages and towns of the peninsula therefore need for pure drinking water has become a critical issue.
The Ministry is adopting a two-prong approach to solve the problem. A long term approach is to bring in water from Kilinochchi from Iranamadu Kulam through pipe to overheads tanks located in different parts of the peninsula and supply them pipe-borne water.
The short-term arrangement is to distribute drinking water by bowsers to households and others in the peninsula.
