Sri Lanka's support for India's UNSC candidature

Sri Lanka has reaffirmed its support for the candidature of India as a Permanent Member of an expanded UN Security Council (UNSC).

"Sri Lanka is supporting for India’s candidature for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for 2011-2012," said a media statement issued yesterday by the Indian Foreign Secretary Ms. Nirupama Rao.

The United Nations Security Council is the organ of the United Nations charged with maintaining peace and security among nations. While other organs of the United Nations only make recommendations to member governments, the Security Council has the power to make decisions which member governments must carry out under the United Nations Charter. There are 15 members at the Security Council with five permanent members and ten elected members. China, France, Russia, UK and the USA are the five permanent members with veto powers. Ten other members are elected by the General Assembly for 2-year terms, with five replaced each year. The members are chosen by regional groups.

India, Japan, Germany, South Africa and Brazil are seeking permanent seats in the UN Security Council.
