|
The Indian Leader of the Opposition Ms Sushma Swaraj called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday in New Delhi. She congratulated the President on the recent victories in the Presidential election and the general elections.
Ms Swaraj of Bharatiya Janata Party became the Opposition leader in the Lok sabha, the Indian house of representatives when the party opted her over the veteran Party leader Lal Krishna Advani.
During the discussions, Ms Swaraj said that she approved the Indian government’s pledge to support Sri Lanka’s future efforts for national development. She also emphasised the need to further strengthen and cement the longstanding Indo-Sri Lanka friendship.
The Indian opposition ignored the call made by a section of Tamil Nadu politicians to boycott the visit of President Rajapaksa.
