|
The General Treasury has allocated Rs.1689.8 million to purchase paddy directly from the farmers throughout the Island.
The highest amount of 1300 million has been allocated to Paddy Marketing Board and Rs.184 million to Department of Co-operative Development. In addition, Rs.206 million has been distributed among the District Secretaries to purchase paddy through Multi Purpose Co-operative Societies in their respective areas in order to maintain price stability for paddy.
The guaranteed price given to farmers is Rs.30/kg for Samba and Rs.28/kg for Nadu.
Since the Paddy cultivators are given fertilizer at 90 percent subsidized prize with necessary irrigation facilities the cost of one kilo gram of paddy is estimated to be less than Rs.20/. However, in order to maintain the price stability the Government has given the guaranteed price.
Divisional Secretaries in larger paddy cultivation Districts such as Ampara, Polonnaruwa, Anuradhapura, Moneragala, Puttalam and Kilinochchi have been given Rs.20 million each. In order to streamline the paddy purchase, the Multi Purpose Co-operative societies in these areas have been entrusted the task of purchasing paddy
directly from the farmers.
