Unemployment rate declining

 

Sri Lanka's 4th quarter unemployment rate for 2009 was reported as 5.7% compared to 5.9% in the third quarter of 2009.

In the 4th quarter of 2009, out of total employed persons, the private sector employed the highest number of employees (41%). 31% was recorded as self-employed and 15% of employees belonged to public sector. 10% were unpaid family workers.

Among all age groups [(15 - 24 years), (25-29 years), (30 years and above)], unemployment rate of females is higher than that of males irrespective of the age group.

The unemployment rate of females stands at 8.7% and males, 4%.
