The Indian Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Nirmal Verma called on President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (June 28) at Temple Trees to discuss the strengthening of ties between the Navies of the two countries.

It was discussed that the modernization of the Kankasanthurai Harbour and related research will be carried out with the assistance of the Indian Navy. Discussions also focused on holding training programmes for Sri Lankan and Indian Navy officers and sailors.

Feasibility studies on a shipping service between Colombo and Tuticorin ports and a boat service between Talaimannar and Rameswaran will also be undertaken.

The Indian Navy Chief told President Rajapaksa that his official visit to India strengthened the historical relations between India and Sri Lanka. He added that therefore, good progress can be expected on naval relations between the two countries.
