Foreign employment increased

 

The number of Sri Lankan employees leaving abroad for employment has increased to 67,136 in the first quarter of 2010 (January to March) compared with the same period in 2009, stated Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment.

It is an increase of 22 percent in comparison with the first quarter of 2009.

Thus foreign exchange earned due to this is USD 890 million which shows a increase of 14 percent of exchange earning. Foreign employment increased by 72 percent to Doha Qatar, 32 percent to Kuwait, 28 percent to Jordan and 11 percent to United Arab Emirates. SLBFE expect a target of USD 4 million of foreign exchange through foreign employment during this year.

In addition the wage increases to certain categories of workers in accordance with a Government request, emphasis on skilled categories, better training, awareness on improved financial management, enhanced protocol on job agreements, salaries are also seen as reasons behind the increase in remittances.
