Govt to popularize organic fertilizer

 

The Government has taken action to popularize the production and use of organic fertilizer in the country. According to the Sri Lanka's Organic Fertilizer Bureau of Agricultural Development and Agrarian Services, the Government has allocated Rs.225 million for this purpose.

The aim of the Government is to minimize the use of imported chemical fertilizer through the popularization of organic fertilizer among farmers.

The Government spends Rs.65 billion annually for the fertilizer subsidy which goes mainly to paddy farmers. The Bureau reports said that already 12,000 acres of paddy are cultivated in Hambantota, Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Monaragala and Ampara Districts with the use of organic fertilizer.

Department of Agriculture has commenced 10 research centres island wide for popularization of organic fertilizer.

The Bureau is also to provide Rs.500, 000 each for these centres to improve the infrastructure of these centres.
