The Security Forces Headquarters in Mullativu on Wednesday (7 July) gave permission to fishermen to restart their fishing industry in the deep seas off Mullativu after nearly 25 years. Earlier restrictions on fishing in Mullaitivu seas was due to security concerns and the total relaxation of restrictions thus enables fishermen to restart their livelihood at the outset, using boats and the trawlers provided by the Army.
Sri Lanka Army provided them with refurbished fishing trawlers, earlier captured from the LTTE. The Army has repaired, refurbished and repainted a total of over 150 fishing boats and trawlers captured from the LTTE. Some of them have been left behind by fleeing terrorists. Repairs are carried out in liasion with the Ministry of Fisheries and the CeyNor foundation following initiatives taken by the Army.
In order to overcome the shortage of fishing equipment, the Army also gave away fishing gears, repaired outboard motors and a stock of other renovated fishing equipment to five newly-founded fisheries societies.
