Lanka to have sea planes soon

The Ports and Aviation Ministry will purchase two sea planes this year to boost inland air transportation, and to add novel units to the airline service to develop the airline service giving maximum contribution to the growing tourism sector.

These two sea planes will also be helpful to the tourism sector as local and foreign tourists will be keen on using the sea plane service. The sea planes are expected to be purchased from Canada.

According to the program, several inland reservoirs and lakes will be facilitated to be suitable for landing and taking off sea planes. It has been planned to operate sea planes from the Negombo lagoon to various parts of the country. Under this, 12 inland lakes and waterways will be facilitated including Beira lake, Victoria reservoir, Tisa Wewa, Parakrama Samudraya.

The sea plane service is widely used in certain countries as a mode of passenger transportation. It can be easily adapted to the country as there are many inland lakes and reservoirs.
