Beach parks to boost tourism

The Coast Conservation Department of the Ports and Aviation Ministry is to establish several beach parks throughout the country to cater to local and foreign tourists.

The first beach park under this programme will be established at Kalido beach in Kalutara.

The other locations earmarked for construction of beach parks under this programme include, Wellawatte, Panadura, Beruwela, Koggala, Matara, Arugambay, Chilaw, Crow’s Island and Trincomalee.

“These beach parks will be constructed aiming to boost the booming tourism sector while conserving the coastal belt”, The Deputy Minister of Ports and Aviation Rohitha Abeygunawardena said. Unauthorized constructions along the coastal belt will be removed to protect the environment while preserving the natural beauty of coasts, he added.

In accordance to the present regulations of the Coast Conservation Act, no construction will be allowed within 35m from the sea, while the buffer zone varies from 35m to 125m depending on various factors. The longest 125m buffer zone has been declared in Pothuwil.
