The Ministry of Local Government and Provincial Councils launched a road-rehabilitation project which will help spur inclusive growth and new economic opportunities in the country.
The USD 3 million project, which was launched yesterday is financed by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction under the administration of the Asian development Bank (ADB).
The selected road network in Eastern and North Central Provinces will be rehabilitated by the people in the villages themselves who would be paid for their work and the project will thereby concentrate not only on the roads and rehabilitation but also the people's wellbeing by providing employment to thousands of individuals as well.
The road rehabilitation project will be implemented in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Trincomalee and Batticaloa districts.
The main objective of the project is to improve the quality of life of the people with special attention given to particularly vulnerable people like war widows, single women with dependents and families with disabled.
