The Irrigation and Water Resources Management Ministry has taken action to establish an Irrigation and Water Resources Museum, supported by UNESCO.
Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Management Nimal Siripala De Silva recently had discussions with a delegation of UNESCO New Delhi to discuss matters in this regard. UNESCO pledged support to establish the museum which depicts the ancient hydraulic civilization of Sri Lanka dating back 2500 years.
Considering the importance of water security for sustainable development of the country it was agreed that the knowledge of water management be shared among key decision makers. UNESCO with other UN agencies will arrange a seminar on the role and contribution of Parliamentarians to achieve this purpose.
An inter-sectoral meeting on water management will be organised to find solutions to the critical water issues and also to share information on new water management technologies.
The delegation included Director of UNESCO Office in New Delhi Mr. Armoogum Parsuramen and the UNESCO representatives for Bhutan, India, Maldives and Sri Lanka.
