Boat rides in Mahaweli reservoirs to boost tourism

The Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources has taken steps to commence a tourism promotion programme in the Mahaweli reservoirs.

Under this initiative, boat rides will be initiated for local and foreign tourists in the Mahaweli reservoirs. This will be start in the Victoria, Kotmale, Randenigala and Maduru-oya reservoirs. The Mahaweli Authority is taking steps to initially operate boat rides from the Randenigala reservoir at a nominal fee.

Tourists utilising the boat service will also have the opportunity to view wild life as the Randenigala reservoir is located adjoining the Randenigala- Victoria wild life sanctuary while the Maduru-oya reservoir is in close proximity to the Maduru-oya wild life sanctuary.

The Ministry has also directed the MASL officials to look into the possibility of organising a luxury bus service from star class hotels situated in Kandy, Dambulla and Polonnaruwa areas to relevant reservoirs in order to promote this venture.
