Hindu street procession after 16 years

 

The colourful Hindu religious festival Adi Vel 2010 will be held on July 23 after a lapse of 16 years. President Mahinda Rajapaksa accepted the invitation to participate at the Adi Vel 2010 when the colourful procession reaches Temple Trees on that day.

The trustees and members of Sammangod Sri Kathir Velautha Swami Temple and Manicavinayagak Temple extended an invitation to President Rajapaksa at the Temple Trees on Sunday (July 18) to participate in the 2010 Adi Vel Festival.

The 160-year-old Adi Vel Hindu religious ceremony, which could not be held for seventeen years due to menace of terrorism resumes this year.

Chief Trustee Mr, A. Manickwasagar handed over the invitation to the President fot the festival scheduled to be held on July 23, 2010. Trustees, Mr. R. Sivarama, Mr. R. Asokakumar and Mr. P. Sundaralingam were also present on that occasion.

President has extended fullest coopeation and assured security for the Adi Vel festival, said Temple Trustee Ashok Kumar. He added that the Adi Vel procession will travel through many streets of Colombo staring from Pettah and travel through York Street, Achilon Square and Galle Road.
