Jaffna depot, island’s most profitable

Jaffna depot has been able to function as the most profitable venture out of the 103 depots countrywide, operating 100% of the deployed busses for Jaffna. The Transport Ministry had appointed 60 drivers and conductors to the Jaffna SLTB Depot to provide a better service.

“It was an asset to the country because the Government deployed 94 busses to Jaffna and the management had operated 92 of them efficiently on a daily basis”, said Transport Minister Kumara Welgama, after an inspection tour last week.

Though the SLTB had been running at a loss, the Jaffna depot management had faced all the challenges successfully and earned profits while providing a people friendly service, he added.

He said that the railway line between Medawachchiya and Mannar would be constructed in two stages. First the railroad between Madu road and Medawachchiya would be laid and subsequently the line between Madu Road and Mannar would be build. He had instructed railway authorities to pay back-wages to some employees engaged in Medawachchiya line construction.

The CGR had also planned to construct 23 railway stations between Vavuniya and Jaffna and many local and foreign organizations would fund the projects, Minister Welgama said.
