Govt boosts North transportation

 

The project to build the Vavuniya-Jaffna and the Medawachchiya - Thalaimannar railways, carried out by the Ministry of Transport will complete in the near future.

The Vavuniya-Jaffna railway is almost complete. After another 2kms the rail track will reach the Omanthai railway station. The trains are operational up to Thandikulam on this railway.

Steps have also been taken to build 23 railway stations from Vavuniya to Jaffna with the assistance of several institutions.

The Ministry will initiate a project to expedite the bus service in the North, making Vavuniya the center for all busses coming from Jaffna, Mannar and Mullativu.

The Ministry will also start several long distance bus services such as Kilinochchi-Colombo, Batticaloa-Kilinochchi, Trincomalee-Kilinochchi, Mannar-Batticaloa, Mannar-Trincomalee, Mullativu-Colombo, Mullativu-Kilinochchi, and Mullativu-Batticaloa.

Under this development initiative, the Ministry will also commence driving schools especially in Mannar, Kilinochchi and Vavuniya, and will providing driving licences to the drivers in the area.
