President of the Tamil League in Mauritius, Suppaiye Vydealingam called on Tamil expatriates to seize the opportunity created in Sri Lanka to consolidate business in Mauritius and Sri Lanka.
He made this statement at a reception held in honour of the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to South Africa and Mauritius, D. Wijesinghe when he made an official visit to Mauritius to present credentials to the President of Mauritius.
The President of the Tamil League further said, ‘let us seize this opportunity, the more so that we have in our midst this evening the President of the Mauritius Tamil Chamber of Commerce and Professionals’, stated the President of the Tamil League.
‘You may wish to know that in the recent past we organized meetings at this very place to protest against the untold sufferings of our brothers and sisters in Sri Lanka and this evening we are welcoming an ambassador of the Government of Sri Lanka. I believe this is a good omen. We can only be optimistic and pray that fundamentals of human rights prevail and the situation in Sri Lanka will be redressed’, he further stated.
Speaking on the occasion, the High Commissioner D. Wijesinghe said that the end of the thirty year conflict has created space to resolve legitimate problems of the Tamil community and the moderate leadership of the Tamil community seems to be ready to make use of this.
‘I urge the Tamil Diaspora also to follow suit. The present Government on its part in addition to rehabilitation and reconstruction of the war affected areas, has appointed a ‘Commission on Lessons Learned and Reconciliation’ to bring about a permanent solution to any remaining issues’, the High Commissioner said.
The Tamil League of Mauritius in association with three other Tamil Organizations; Mauritius Tamil Temples Federation, Tamil Speaking Union and Union Tamole de Mauritius organized this reception.
