The Government has taken action to grant the ownership of lands to 58,000 settler families of Mahaweli colonies so that they could claim ownership to land which they have been living since the inception of the accelerated Mahaweli project. Under this, 35, 000 families living in the Mahaweli zones will be granted state land deeds within the next few months, official sources said.
The 'allocation papers' of the lands would be given to the farmers soon under an emergency programme as instructed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Earlier Mahaweli settlers were given only a license renewed year by year, for settlement and cultivation in state land.
Mahaweli Authority will grant land deeds to all remaining Mahaweli families in the future.
