Respect laws of
SL when travelling – British HC advises |

We want Brits to enjoy their holiday but at the same time expect people to respect the laws and customs of Sri Lanka and the Maldives, stated Angie Wakefield, Vice Consul at the British High Commission, Colombo (BHC).
I would advise that Brits travelling overseas read our travel advice, she added.
“British nationals need to realise when they come to Sri Lanka or the Maldives that they are not in the UK anymore”, commented Wakefield. “I know this sounds obvious, but have lost count of the amount of times a customer has started a sentence with '… but if I was in the UK....'
According to the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office, a lack of travel insurance and inadequate preparation compound the hazards faced by many Britons abroad.
The recently published report, British Behaviour Abroad, shows that Britons are still getting into preventable problems abroad. The report is based on incident figures reported by British visitors and residents to FCO offices around the world between April 2009 and March 2010.
While lost or stolen passports were by far the most frequent problem encountered by British tourists and residents (27,272 reported incidents worldwide), among other more serious problems highlighted by the report include drink and drug-related arrests, the FCO stated.
