China sends
experts to assist de-mining |

China is to commence a programme to expedite de-mining in the North and East. The Chinese government has sent a team of experts including military officers to study the initial work of the programme.
A discussion was held between the Chinese experts and Lankan officers of the Humanitarian De-mining Programme facilitated by the Economic Development Ministry.
All necessary action has been taken to de-mine approximately 1500 sq kms in the North and East, the Director of the Humanitarian De-mining programme, Monti Ranathunga said.
“It is estimated that another 2400 sq kms need to be de-mined in the area.
Steps will be taken to expedite de-mining in that area”, he added.
Economic Development Ministry will also establish a Bureau on de-mining.
