The Ministry of Science and Technology has prepared a five year national policy, ‘Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Sri Lanka 2011-2015’ to produce goods and services using world’s modern technologies.
This is designed to double Sri Lanka’s current per capita income, US $ 2200 to US $ 4000 within the next five years, placing the country in the ranks of middle income nations. The ministry expects to use the Nanotechnology used by many countries under this initiative.
“Economic development depends on our ability to produce goods and services that are successfully sold in the global market. For them to be sold, our goods and services must be better and in quality, or cheaper than those from abroad”, said the Minister of Science and Technology Tissa Vitarana, at the Presidential Science Award Ceremony-2010 held recently.
We must produce quality value added products that not only bring in a much higher return for investment, but also could successfully compete against products from abroad, the Minister further said.
The draft of the five year national policy was handed over to President Rajapaksa at the award ceremony.
