The diplomatic corps had pledged to contribute towards the new project proposed by the Western Provincial Council Barawa biodiversity project to be launched at the end of this year, External Affairs Minister Prof G.L. Peiris said at a press briefing held at the Ministry yesterday (2 August).
The project would protect fauna and flora which in many respects are unique to Sri Lanka. About 90 percent of the diplomatic corps responded positively to the request made by the External Ministry, he said.
The Barawa biodiversity park project is situated within the Divisional Secretaries of Homagama, Seethawaka and Padukka of the Colombo District. The project costs 14 million US dollars, Western Province Environment Minister Udaya Gammanpila said.
There are 5,568 varieties of plants in Sri Lanka and out of that 1,037 were endemic to Sri Lanka and every single plant has a medicinal value, he explained.
It is a mitigation and adaptation process and it is the first time in the history that a Provincial Council plans to carry out a project of this nature in collaboration with the External Affairs Ministry and the diplomatic corps, he noted.
