Sri Lanka has shown an excellent progress in the IT industry compared to other countries in the world, Vice President of the Intel World Ahead Program for Intel Corporation John E. Davies said.
"The Sri Lankan market has been very innovative during the past two years and the support given by the Sri Lankan government is encouraging to any industry that likes to invest in the country," the Vice President said.
He said that the Sri Lankan It market is getting higher than the global market. "Although there are some IT infrastructure to be developed, the country is on the right direction," Mr. Davies said.
Promotion of English language and expansion of IT knowledge were given special emphasis in the Mahinda Chintana and Nenasala Programmes were established under the guidance of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to take Information Technology to the rural areas.
The Nenasala programme launched in 2005 provide access to internet, telephones and other information services to the public in rural communities. Nanasalas give the rural community quick methods of transferring documents through fax or email. The centers also help improve IT literacy in the country and bridge the digital divide by providing IT training for rural communities at a minimal cost.
The 601st Nenasala under the programme of setting up 1000 Nenasala telecentres island-wide was opened in Badulla June this year.
Meanwhile, a research study broadband Internet market said the Internet broadband users in Sri Lanka will exceed 4.3 million users in the next four year from around 330,000 now.
According to the report on the Sri Lankan telecom industry by US-based Proactive investors, a financial news and analysis provider, the broadband internet market in Sri Lanka, though in its infancy with very low penetration levels, has the available technology which is on par with most developed nations, ranging from ADSL fixed wire-line services to Wi-Max fixed wireless broadband access, GPRS mobile telephony Internet to HSPA mobile broadband Internet connectivity.
