Cabinet approvals

 

The Cabinet Spokesman and the Minister of Mass Media and Information Keheliya Rambukwella announced the following decisions taken at the Cabinet Meeting held on 04 August.

Academy of Financial Studies to be established

The Cabinet granted approval to set up the Academy of Financial Studies (AFS) as the Training Arm of the Ministry of Finance and Planning taking into consideration the inadequacy of training facilities in Public Finance, Accountancy, and Taxation etc.

This will provide training facilities to officers in the Ministry of Finance and Planning, including those attached to Accountancy and Planning Services, and officers of the Inland Revenue, Customs and Excise Departments.

Ultra Heat Temperature Treated Milk Processing Plants

Approval was granted to expand the activities of Milco (Pvt.) Ltd., to supply liquid milk with long shelf-life to the Sri Lankan consumer and to establish two Ultra Heat Temperature Treated Milk Processing Plants for this purpose, one in Colombo and the other in Polonnaruwa.

These plants will provide facilities for processed milk for a shelf-life of 30-40 days. Presently the shelf life is only 3 days. The estimated cost of the project is Rs.600 million which will be in the form of a loan to be obtained by Milco (Pvt.) Ltd. through its banks. Milk production is now on the increase and the Government expects the milk production to increase up to 50% by 2015 from the current 22%, depending on the needs.

Additional infrastructure facilities for the Faculty of Medicine, Ragama

On the recommendation of the Minister of Higher Education, S.B Dissanayaka, the Cabinet approved the provision of basic infrastructure facilities for the Faculty of Medicine, Ragama. Accordingly, two three-storied buildings for 100 female students with a gross floor area of 1100 sq.m, at a cost of Rs170 million will be constructed.

Lubricant market

Various parties have expressed interest in entering the lubricant market and therefore, it has become necessary to initiate a second round of inviting requests for qualifications. On the Recommendation of Minister Susil Premajayanth, the Cabinet of Ministers granted approval to extend authorization of existing parties by another 5 years at the time of the expiry of their respective Agreements, of all the 14 parties including those that could expire after the end of 2010 and to conduct a second round of inviting requests for qualification by the Public Utilities Commission.


A Technical Evaluation and Negotiation Committees will also be appointed for the purpose.
