Oil explorer Cairn India announced that it will start oil drilling work in Sri Lanka during the 2nd quarter of 2011, news360.lk reported. The Company in its August corporate presentation says already they have carried out the “seismic survey” covering an area of 1750 sq km in the oil blocks which were given to them in the Sri Lankan seas.
Cairn plans to start drilling work in 3 wells.
Sri Lanka provided the first oil exploration license to Cairn India in year 2008.
Along with the Sri Lankan block, Cairn is also working towards starting drilling work in 4 other oil blocks in India.
Sri Lanka is also looking to invite international bids to handover few other remaining oil blocks in the Gulf of Mannar basin to be explored.
UK trade arm recently announced that some British firms are also looking at the possibility of exploring oil in Sri Lanka, news360.lk reported.
