Five more Vidatha centres soon

The Technology and Research Ministry said measures have been taken to set up five more Vidatha Resource Centres (VRC) within next couple of weeks.

The Pallama VRC in Puttalama, Ganewaththa and Thalawa VRCs in Kurunegala, Meegahakurula VRC in Badulla and Mahara VRC will be handed over to the villagers.

The ‘Vidatha Resource Centres’ are a key measure taken by the Ministry of Science and Technology to provide access to email, internet, fax and distance learning in rural areas of Sri Lanka under the theme of “Gamata Thakshanaya’’. This carries out Technology Transfer Programmes island wide.

In addition to providing access to technology, these Resource Centres provide Bank Loans, local & foreign market information, techniques of Enterprise Development to improve living standards of rural communities. The programme is also aimed at educating and training small and medium scale traditional industrialists on the use of new technology to improve their products in order to penetrate the international market through value added products.

The Vidatha program commenced in 2005 and 257 VRCs have been established island wide so far. The Ministry of Technology and Research is planning to establish 330 VRCs covering all Divisional Secretariats in Sri Lanka.
