Sabaragamuwa agri & dairy farming to be developed

The Government has initiated two programmes to improve agriculture and dairy farming in the Sabaragamuwa Province. Under these programmes, it is anticipated to increase the paddy yield per acre from the current level of 70 bushels per acre to 75 bushels while the fresh milk production is to be increased by about 30% by 2015.

The aim of the programme for agriculture is to grow necessary food items in the Kegalle and Ratnapura districts. Under this, production of vegetables and other cereals will also be increased by 10 percent.

Another major component of this programme is to develop 450 minor reservoirs and irrigation networks in the Sabaragamuwa Province, which would supply water to cultivate 80 percent of the paddy lands in the Yala and Maha seasons. The current 7,000 organic manure manufacturing centres will also be increased up to 10,000 centres.

The programme for milk production will increase the current fresh milk production in the Province (45 million litres) to reach the target. Other expected targets of the programme include development of livestock farming by 50% and the promotion of fresh water fishery industry. Over 500,000 fingerlings have already been released to tanks and this will be raised to 15,000,000 fingerlings by 2013.
