Sri Lanka Foundation of Los Angeles, California will host Sri Lanka Day 2010 tomorrow (August 7) at the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica, USA with the support of the Sri Lankan community in Southern California. This is an event of much significance as it shares Sri Lanka’s rich heritage with the American people.
The LA Sri Lanka Day, held annually since 2006, is a combination of food, music, dance and entertainment as well as a street parade.
The Sri Lankan Curry Food Festival is among the eagerly awaited events of the day where people in Los Angeles will have a taste of Sri Lankan food, cooked live in the most exciting ways. Thousands of families in the area who enjoy Sri Lankan cuisine, will have the chance to taste delicious Lankan dishes.
The Sri Lanka Day Parade is another item in this event, with a colourful procession of dancers, drummers, masked performers, flag bearers and a theatre elephant. The parade recalls and pays tribute to the ‘Esala Perahara,’ that takes place annually in Sri Lanka signifying ancient religious and cultural traditions.
Another highlight of the LA Sri Lanka Day will be live performances of Sri Lankan and American musicians and dancers keeping the audience entertained the whole day. It will feature Sri Lankan “Kandyan” dancers and drummers as well as Bharatha Natyam dancers, a rare treat in Southern California which attracts many Asian dance enthusiasts. The stage will come alive with dance performances highlighting religious and cultural events important to the Sri Lankan community.
