SriLankan Airlines was named the Best Airline Operator in South Asia for the fifth consecutive year at the annual KLIA Awards in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which honours contributions to Malaysia's travel and tourism industry.
The KLIA Awards are presented by Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhard to honour all partners operating at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), including airlines (passenger, low cost and cargo), food & beverage outlets, and retail businesses.
Airlines are judged on various criteria which include the number of passengers carried to and from Kuala Lumpur and service performance.
SriLankan's Head of Worldwide Sales Mohamed Fazeel said, “SriLankan Airlines has won this award since the inception of the KLIA Awards five years ago. We consider it a great honour since Kuala Lumpur International Airport has been recognised as one of the finest airports in the world. Malaysia is an important destination in our route network, to which we intend continuously increasing frequencies over the next several years."
“SriLankan stands out for its high quality of service and is preferred by large numbers of travellers, despite the ever-increasing number of flights to Kuala Lumpur by other airlines," said Fazeel.
SriLankan, which has a global route network of 49 destinations in 31 countries, recently transformed its on-board services, comforts, meal services, beverages and facilities, vowing to “Change the way we fly, and the way our customers experience travel".
Tourism and business travel between Malaysia and Sri Lanka has been booming over the last 12 months, and SriLankan also links many cities in India with Kuala Lumpur via Colombo. In addition, its leisure arm SriLankan Holidays also works in partnership with Malaysia's tourism authority to promote Kuala Lumpur as a destination, stated the SriLankan Airlines.
SriLankan presently operates 10 flights per week between Kuala Lumpur and Colombo. SriLankan and Malaysia Airlines work closely to support each other and recently strengthened their mutual code-share partnerships which allow passengers of either airline to fly on a large number of the other airline's flights.
Expanding its services to the Far East, the airline recently added four-times a week service to Shanghai, the third Chinese city in its global route network.
SriLankan was last month named ‘Airline of the Year' at Sri Lanka's Presidential Awards for Travel and Tourism 2009, and SriLankan Holidays picked up the award for ‘Outbound Tour Operator of the Year', both for the second consecutive time.
