Fish production in Sri Lanka has registered a steady growth this year.
From January to end of June this year the off-shore fish harvest has amounted to 58,770 Metric Tons. In the month of June the harvest amounted to 10,740 metric tons which is an increase of 3,250 metric tons compared to June last year.
The total fish harvest of coastal and lagoon fish from January to June amounted to 97,750 Metric Tons. In the month of June the harvest of this category amounted to 16,380 metric tons, which is an increase of 4,740 Metric tons compared to June last year.
The total fish harvest in the first six months of this year amounted to 156,520 metric tons, compared to 141,090 metric tons in the first six months of last year.
Meanwhile, the inland fish production has also shown a steady increase. The total inland fish production during the first six months of 2010 amounted to 20,660 metric tons, compared to 17,050 during the first six months last year.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources stated that the coastal fish production has increased in the Northern Districts of Mannar and Jaffna due to accelerated rehabilitation programmes, and fish production in the inland waters were limited mainly due to the changing weather pattern as a result of heavy rains and wins and harvesting of seasonal tanks were delayed due to the high water levels in the tanks.
