All 450 families in the Karagan Levaya and surrounding areas affected by the construction of the Hambantota Port, have been provided with financial assistance and lands as compensation. The Ports Authority has also provided all necessary infrastructure facilities to those who received lands.
2000 hectares of land in the Hambantota district was acquired for the construction of the first phase of the Hambantota Port project, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority stated.
Thus, all obstacles have been removed to construct the new Hambantota Port.
Residents of the Hambantota district are made aware of the benefits of the Hambantota Port project through Seminars and workshops.
The port is expected to achieve domestic as well as international targets. The project will help fulfil the goal of making Sri Lanka a naval hub in the world, to face regional challenges, and attract foreign revenue and investments.
Domestically, the Port project will help find solutions to the problem of unemployment in the area, generating more than 25,000-30,000 indirect job opportunities. It will also create a skilled workforce and develop infrastructural facilities in the area.
