Programme to prevent road accidents

The Ministry of Transport has commenced a programme to prevent road accidents by enforcing laws on riding motor cycles, with the aim of ensuring the safety of the people.

Loosened laws and regulations on motor cycles will be tightened under this new programme. Riding license and helmet will be essential for motor cycle riders hereafter. Accordingly, issuing of license will be completed before December this year.

Statistics show that at least six people die from road accidents per day in Sri Lanka becoming the second major cause of deaths in Sri Lanka. The highest number of deaths was caused by war. 66% of deaths from road accidents were motor cycle accidents. According to the statistics, 84% of accidents were committed by cyclists who did not have license.

The Ministry will also take action to reduce causes for accidents such as drunk driving, high speed, mobile phone usage while driving and recklessness of pedestrians.
