Strict measures against exploitation of women & children - President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa advised officials of the Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Affairs to take strict measures against the exploitation of women and children.

The President was speaking at the Progress Review Meeting of the Ministry at Temple Trees.

The President also stressed the need for a mechanism to constantly monitor homes where destitute children are housed and prosecute those responsible for sexual abuse of children at such homes.

He asked the officials to look into the possibilities of appointing monitoring committees near homes housing destitute children and advised that a religious dignitary, a Police official and a Government servant should serve in such committees.

He also said measures must be taken to monitor the movement and behaviour of children whose parents are either employed abroad or imprisoned.

He requested the officials to conduct a survey on all orphans in children’s homes and those under the care of the Probation and Childcare Service officials and submit a report to him.

Child Development and Women’s Affairs Minister Tissa Karaliyadda, Deputy Minister M. L. H. M. Hisbullah, Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunga and Ministry Secretary Ms N. R. Gunasekera were present at the meeting.
