13 inland airports will be renovated to boost inland air transportation system.

Polonnaruwa, Hingurakgoda, Palali, Rathmalana, Koggala, Katukurunda, Weeravila, Trincomalee, Sigiriya, Batticaloa, Ampara, KKS and Vavuniya airports are set to be renovated under this project, according to the Ministry of Ports and Aviation. The runways of these airports will be lengthened and widened to accommodate medium scale aircrafts.

Ampara, Trincomalee and Koggala airports will be developed initially while facilities at Rathmalana and Palali airports will be enhanced.

A committee comprising Sri Lanka Air Force, Airport and Aviation Limited, Tourist Board, Mihin Lanka and the Civil Aviation Authority has been appointed by the Ports and Aviation Ministry to obtain suggestions for the renovation process.

In line with the development of these airports, moves are underway to import medium size passenger aircrafts. Accordingly, two seaplanes and two MA 60 aircrafts which are said to be ideal for short distance passenger transportation will be imported.
