Demining in the Vadamarachchi East area in the Northern Province has completed and resettlement of IDPs is being carried out in the area.
Vadamarachchi, a division in the Jaffna District which consists the towns Point Pedro, Valvettithurai and Nelliyady, was the place where the well known military offensive was carried out by the Army troops during May to June 1987, to re-gain the territory from LTTE control.
Army Engineers and foreign agencies collectively conducted the de-mining operations in Vadamarachchi East.
During the first phase of resettlement in the area, eighty one families were resettled at Ampan in Marathankerni divisional secretariat on 30th last month.
Tin roofing sheets and cement needed for renovating their houses were distributed among the resettled families. Agricultural equipments were also distributed among 40 farming families as a measure to strengthen their livelihoods. School items were also distributed among children of those families resettled.
The government earlier resettled IDPs in former LTTE terrains such as Kilinochchi, and Mulaitivu. Kilinochchi was the administrative center of the LTTE. Mulaitivu was the military stronghold of the LTTE for many years, from which it directed most of the operations against the Security Forces. It was also the Head Quarters of its leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.
