SLPA records highest container handling

Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) has recorded the highest ever rate in container handling, passing the limit of 200,000 containers last month (August). 201,217 containers were handled by the SLPA which was a 22% increase from August 2009.

The SLPA has handled 1,392, 959 containers from January to August this year. The number was 1,126,511 in 2009. Thus there is an increase of 24% in container handling during the first six months.

The Jaya Container Terminal in the Colombo Port was established in 1985. It reached the 2 million mark in container handling by 2004. It has increased by 4 million each year from 2005 to 2010.

This progress in Ports activities is a significant step forward in achieving the goals of ‘Mahinda Chintana’ to make this country the centre of the Asian silk route once again, taking advantage of its unique geographical location.
