Vadamarachchi gets 10mn worth leather factory

Vadamarachchi, the place where a severe military offensive occurred in 1987, recently got a Rs.10 million worth leather product factory under “Mahinda Chintana: Rekiya Bihidora Programme”.

This was the 217th Industrial Village set up under “Mahinda Chintana” Programme for the generation of employment opportunities to village youth through the establishment of Rural Industries.

Rs.5 million worth coir factory was also set up in Chavakachcheri, under the same programme and 35 employees were recruited to be trained by the Industrial Development Board of Ceylon (IDB).

“The President by introducing the “Rekiya Bihidora” programme had made a concerted effort for solving the unemployment problem of the youth”, said, Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda.

Accordingly, this opportunity needed to be best made use by the youth of the area, and emerge as the best shoe producing Industrial Village in the Country which has a history for production of leather goods, he added.

The government recently completed de-mining in the Vadamarachchi East area and resettlement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) is now being carried out.
