No disparities in providing education – President

I will not allow any disparities on ethnic or provincial basis when it comes to providing education and the government will give more attention to the development of rural schools, stated President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He made this statement after handing over teaching appointments to 470 persons at the auditorium of the Uva Province.

Teaching is an honorable profession. A teacher has a great responsibility of producing a decent and ethical set of people to the nation who eventually will take over the country, the President further stated.

The government took necessary steps to give due recognition to the profession of teaching and in the past few years the government was able to resolve many issues pertaining to this service.

The President pointed out that teachers have a responsibility towards the children and that they need to relieve the rural children from difficulties arising due to transfers. He called on teachers to fulfill the responsibility towards the nation.

‘Our country has a high literacy rate, one of the highest in Asia. We must improve this. The teachers receiving appointments today have a great responsibility towards bringing the literacy rates up’, President Rajapaksa stated.

He called on the teachers to be committed in producing a creative younger generation without limiting them to their classrooms.
