Comprehensive policy to boost agriculture - President

Instead of mere discussions, a comprehensive policy is needed to boost agriculture in our country which used to thrive in the past, stated President Mahinda Rajapaksa addressing the Committee on food security and living cost at Temple Trees yesterday (Sep 13).

"The country is now liberated from terrorism which was a major impediment for agriculture. Thus, it is now useless to waste time in discussions. Every official should practically follow a programme to develop our agriculture by strengthening local farmers", he added.

The President advised them to carry out a research on seed production factories, seed marketing shops, seed stores and institutions which were closed due to the policies of previous governments. He instructed them to activate a speedy programme to utilize them for the development of agriculture in the country.

The President also noted that the price of essential goods should be kept at a stable level. He advised officials to maintain a food store to prevent consumers facing food shortages.
