Contribute to make Sri Lanka the Wonder of Asia – President tells prisoners

Prisoners gathered here must realize the mistakes they have made and repent them. You should have the determination to be reformed and integrate once again into society. You too should contribute to make Sri Lanka the Wonder of Asia with the end of nearly thirty years of terrorism, stated President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He made this statement at the Prisoners' Welfare Day celebrations held at Temple Trees yesterday (14). More than 500 rehabilitated prisoners participated at the event.

President Rajapaksa pointed out that there are many incidents in this society where people, who bring heroin and other kinds of illegal drugs, move freely while others who commit petty crimes are imprisoned. Sometimes this may be because they are unable to pay a small fine.

He pointed out that the government policy should be to work towards closing up prisons instead of building new prisons.

"Now the time has come to review current regulations which do not meet the needs of the people," the President said.

He further stated that the country needs the help of all intellectuals and lawyers to amend these adverse regulations.

President also pointed out that the government has given special attention to rehabilitating prisoners and working towards addressing the problems faced by authorities of prisons.

He also said that attention must be drawn by religious leaders and social welfare organizations to people who face social injustices and plans must be drawn to lure such people in the right path in a humanitarian way.

President Rajapaksa pointed out that measures need to be taken to stop crimes from being operated from inside prisons.
