Accidental blast claims over 20 lives

 
Military Spokesman Maj Gen Ubhaya Medawala said that an explosion occurred at Karadiyanaru, Batticaloa killing over 20 persons including two Chinese employees of a construction company. The explosion occurred when the employees were taking a stock of explosives from two containers parked at the Police station. The foreign company engaged in road construction in the Eastern Province, kept the containers of explosives at the Karadiyanaru police station and remove small quantities whenever required for construction work.

A large number of policemen were among the dead, Media Center for National Security (MCNS) said.
Karadiyanaru police station also received damages due to the explosion, Senior Superintendent of Police, I.M. Karunarathna said.
