Now 18th Amendment is law

Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa announced in Parliament yesterday that he has certified the 18th Amendment to the Constitution Bill. Therefore, the provisions of the 18th Amendment have become law with effect from yesterday.

The 18th Amendment Bill presented to Parliament seeking approval for the removal of the term limits of the Presidency and appointment of Commissions was passed in Parliament with a two-thirds majority on September 8.

‘The Amendments have become law and its provisions will now become operational,’ the Speaker said.
