President meets expatriates in Houston |

President Mahinda Rajapaksa after the United Nations General Assembly in New York visited the city of Houston on Saturday (25).
The Sri Lankan expatriates in Houston held a reception at Westin Oaks Hotel to welcome President Rajapaksa and First Lady Shiranthi Rajapaksa. Over 500 Sri Lankan expatriates in Houston participated at this occasion.
US Congresswoman in Houston, Sheila Jackson Lee and Houston's Mayor Annise Parker were among the guests who came to welcome President Rajapaksa and First Lady.
"President Mahinda Rajapaksa deserves the tribute of Sri Lankan community in the US as the leader who united the motherland", stated Ven Nanda thero at the function.
US Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee said, at a moment when Sri Lanka is progressing towards development under the directives of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, his tour will immensely contribute to strengthen the relations further between the two countries.
Addressing the function, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said, now Sri Lanka is a peaceful country for all Sri Lankans irrespective of their ethnicity, religion or caste adding that in 2005 people had given him a mandate to eradicate terrorism and he had fulfilled that pledge.
"The humanitarian operation conducted by the Government is not against the Tamil community," he stressed.
President Rajapaksa further said that the 2010 mandate is to develop the country, adding to achieve this he needs the assistance of all Sri Lankan expatriates.
The President pointed out the importance of providing a good understanding of our cultural and moral values to our children who live abroad.
