Heritage sites preserved

 

The Government has successfully completed 15 projects to preserve heritage and cultural sites island wide, with an assistance of Rs.537 million provided by Netherlands.

The largest expenditure amounting to Rs.136.7 million was spent to the preservation, conservation and restoration of the ancient rampart which is the main physical feature of the World Heritage City of Galle.

Rs.93 million had been spent to transform the ancient Dutch Warehouse in Galle to serve as a centre of excellence disseminating knowledge and education among students, researchers, the general public and international and local tourists visiting Galle.

Rs.75 million was spent for the conservation and restoration of old Dutch Naval Commissioner’s Residence in the Trincomalee district.

Rs.68.3 million had been spent on the Visitor Centre cum Museum at Kataragama. The centre serves as a source of information on the historical and cultural importance of Kataragama and provides related information to local and foreign visitors.

Funds from Netherlands have also been spent on the rehabilitation of Maritime Biological Museum in Galle, to conserve and develop Dutch styled houses in Galle Fort in order to preserve architectural features. In addition, funds have been spent for the conservation of ancient textile collections, to collect dates of archaeological sites in the Southern region, for the preservation of ancient Dutch records, the Urubokke ancient Dam Site, in the Matara District, the Ancient Dutch Warehouse in Galle Fort, and the ancient Dutch Fort at Katuwana.
