A project has been implemented to set up 1000 Handicraft Villages island wide by the Ministry of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development, under “Mahinda Chintana Vision for the Future”.
Accordingly, two Handicraft Villages were inaugurated in Mirigama by the Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda recently.
Under this, a cane related product manufacturing factory was established at Radawadunna. A clay related product manufacturing factory was also established at Webadamulla, as a part of that concerted programme.
“The government has incurred a sum of Rs.3 million towards the establishment of the factory at Radawadunna and a further sum of Rs.2.9 million for the factory at Webadamulla, and it was the bounden duty of all the industrialists at these factories to better their careers whilst exercising extreme care in maintaining the factories, said Minister Devananda.
The Sri Lanka Industrial Development Board functioning under the purview of the Ministry of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development selects the villages comprising traditional Industrialists. The industrialists are then to form co-operatives societies through which technical “know how” is transferred to the individual industrialists together with new designs, the Minister added.
